The Arc of Orange Advocates

The Tall Timber’s self-advocacy group has been having a tremendous impact on the work of The Arc of Orange County.

The advocates are involved in the initial screening process for potential employees. If the advocates do not feel the applicant possess the qualities of those in the code of ethics, the applicant does not go any further in the process. The advocates have been an intricate part of this screening and have a voice in the staff that is hired to work with them and their peers.

The Tall Timber advocates hold regional meetings and are responsible for organizing the conference’s itinerary, scheduling local community leaders to present at the conference and also present on various topics.

The Tall Timbers also attend The Arc of Orange’s quarterly Management Team meeting to present on different topics such as the My Rights Project and person centered programming.

The advocates worked on the My Rights Project with staff from the agency to develop a rights/responsibility booklet that is user friendly and that everyone will be able to understand. The advocates use these booklets and their knowledge to educate everyone throughout the agency. Trainings include a discussion of individual’s rights and the responsibilities that coincide with those rights as well as education in the area of recognizing abuse.

The advocates travel to Albany numerous times throughout the year to march on the Capitol and attend conferences to keep up-to-date on the changes that continue to happen in the OPWDD system that affect them and their peers. The advocates continue to grow as they become respected, valued members of their community.

If you or your family member is interested in joining the Tall Timbers, or in attending a self-advocacy meeting, please contact Cheri Magadanz at Cheryl.Magadanz@thearcoforange.org or by phone at 845-692-0552.
