Social Activities and Recreation Opportunities

Community Activities Program

More than 150 people with developmental disabilities participate in The Arc of Orange County’s Social and Recreational activities each year. This program takes place outside the walls of our agency and into the communities of people we support and their families throughout Orange County and beyond. The Community Activities Program offers year round, integrated recreational and social opportunities for those we serve, ages 13+ years of age. The Community Activities Program also offers one of the most extensive travel opportunities in Orange County for those with developmental disabilities. It includes Day and Overnight weekend vacation trips designed towards providing participants an inclusive experience in the community with their peers that is enjoyable, safe and memorable. The Activities Program is often the ‘back-door’ way into the front door of the agency, providing resources for those who may be interested in finding out more information on the various programs that The Arc of Orange County offers. The Community Activities Program strives to provide recreational & social programs which promote those we serve to be valued and respected members of their community. Some overnight travel destinations have included Lake George, NY, Saratoga, NY, New York City, Lancaster, PA, the Pocono’s, PA, Atlantic City, NJ, Cape Cod, MA, Mystic Seaport, CT, and New Hampshire. Day trip outings have included professional sporting events, county fairs, restaurants, movies, rodeos, local festivals, and holiday shopping.

Day Respite Trip Program

The Arc of Orange Community Activities Program offers Day trips which is part of a Respite opportunity  funded by a Family Support Grant from OPWDD.  Trips are available to those we support who live at home with their families or independently in an apartment setting within the Orange County area. Trip expenses, including staffing & transportation will be partially offset by the Grant. (Please note also that the Activities Program does not want to exclude any from participating in activities and if the fee for trips presents a financial hardship, please feel free to contact Beth Delacruz at any time in regards to such.)  We offer day trips at least 1x per/month throughout the year, for either teens or adults. Trips offered are  as follows:  Adults, ages 21+ yrs. and Teens, ages 13 – 21yrs. Trips for adults will accommodate up to (8) individuals, under the supervision of two staff and trips for teens will accommodate up to (5) individuals, under the supervision of two staff. On some trips, we can accommodate those with ambulation difficulties, or those with autism who may need more support. These trips will have a higher staffing ratio and advance notice must be given to insure that accommodations for such needs can be made. The general meeting place for trips will be at the agency’s Henry F. Cox Center which is located at:  28 Bull Road, Campbell Hall, NY. (We do not offer door-to-door transportation, however locations of convenience to meet on-route to destinations can sometimes be made if arranged in advance.)  These trips are a great opportunity to enjoy time with your friends or make new ones, as we strive to provide safe & enjoyable recreational experiences in the community!

The Arc’s Activities program is a fantastic program that gives opportunities to adults like my daughter to participate in many activities and provides socialization that she would not otherwise have opportunity to take advantage of. Thank you for Beth Delacruz and staff for their hard work and dedication. ~Mina

Once again a fun night we had at the Creative Arts Performance!! Singing the oldies I think is a win, win!! And one of my favorites was Perry Como. Do you remember, he always wore sweaters. Thanks again for your passion and love of our kids. Christopher was SO happy with his scrapbook of his little nephews. He plans on giving it to his brother for Christmas. ~Julie

Thanks so much for such a beautiful tribute to the Creative Arts ensemble. You have such passion and it certainly shows in your work…..or is it play? I loved the power-point presentation, especially Sonny and Cher of our era. Your clients loved it too, as did the parents. Thanks for the memories. The beat goes on! ~Julie

Creative Arts is a great way to keep everyone together. It makes everyone happy. My nephew, George, has participated in the Creative Arts program every session. We find it beneficial to his coordination and interaction with his peers. Beth and staff run a great program. ~ Patricia

Hi Beth! I didn’t know if you saw me?! You were so busy that I didn’t want to interrupt. I had a terrific time at the Creative Arts Closing Performance!!!! I don’t know how to describe…I guess you can say proud, touched, inspired, and more! I think humbled, too, to think of how much the human spirit can accomplish. And, to think that our staff plays such an important, immeasurable part in the lives of people who depend on them. It doesn’t get better than that. Please do let me know when you start your classes again. If possible, I’d like to come to the knitting, crocheting classes. I’ve always wanted to learn! Don’t know if I can at this point, but we’ll see! You guys do wonders and I’m very privileged to have the opportunity to attend and enjoy such an event. Thanks ~Rosemarie P.S. I loved the choice of chorus songs! My favorites were My Girl and Dancin’ Queen! The Carrie Underwood song was so touching.
